Ryan Eggold, the star of NBC’s medical drama New Amsterdam, knows the medical benefits of puppy love.

“She just makes every thing better,” the actor, 34, said of his rescue dog Jodie.

He adopted the “sweet” canine from a shelter and knew she was the perfect pooch the moment he saw her — even though the shelter was full of “amazing dogs.”

“This one dog just kept jumping up and licking my hand. She was so excited,” Eggold said of his first meeting with Jodie.

“It was the best,” he added.

On the drive to her forever home with Eggold, Jodie got to pick her own name.

“I just said names until she looked at me,” her owner said of the process.

Eggold is sharing his pet adoption story to bring attention to the Fund the Shelters Challenge. The Michelson Found Animals Foundation and NBC and Telemundo owned stations have teamed up to create the online competition, which allows animal lovers to donate to participating animal welfare organizations across North America. The groups will use these donations to fund life-saving programs for pets in their communities, to ensure that less animals end up and shelters and more animals end up in loving homes.

The challenge, which launched on Tuesday, is an off shoot of NBCUniversal’s annual Clear the Shelters program. This program works with shelters across North America to offer a day each year where adoption fee are waived or reduced to encourage prospective pet parents to go out and adopt.

“Our Clear The Shelters pet adoption campaign has inspired communities all across the country to open their homes to pets in need, resulting in more than a quarter million homeless animals finding new homes,” Valari Staab, President, NBCUniversal owned television stations, said in a statement. “We’re excited to work with the Michelson Found Animals Foundation to take our Clear The Shelters campaign to a whole new level by offering individuals an opportunity to support their local animal shelters/rescues through donations.”

In a day, the Fund the Shelters Challenge has already raised over $100,000 for animal welfare organizations. To learn more about the challenge and to donate to an animal charity of your choice, visit the challenge’s fundraising site.
