Doctors and nurses are ready to put on their lab coats and uniforms again to welcome and lend help to anyone who needs it. The fourth season of “New Amsterdam” restarts on Friday 3 June on Canale 5 .
After so many sacrifices and hardships during the pandemic period, medical director Max Goodwin ( Ryan Eggold ) and the New Amsterdam hospital team find themselves giving new impetus to their professional and private lives, trying to improve the American health system with the passion and energy that distinguishes them. And it will also be time for Max to come to terms with his feelings towards Dr. Helen Sharpe ( Freema Agyeman ). Waiting to see the developments that the new episodes will bring, here are some curiosities about this exciting series.
Unlike other hospital series, reality here is very close to fantasy. Max Goodwin’s character is inspired by Dr. Eric Manheimer, who wrote “Twelve Patients: Life & Death at Bellevue Hospital”. In the book he recounts his 15-year experience as a medical director at Bellevue in New York, during which he collected over 150 notebooks of notes. The New Amsterdam hospital is in fact the Bellevue (462 First Avenue, Manhattan). Founded in 1736 to provide accessible medical care for all, it is the oldest public hospital in the United States, and the first to house a maternity ward (since 1799). In addition to the Bellevue, many scenes were also shot at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn and at the Metropolitan Hospital in Harlem. In 1893, during his second term, United States President Grover Cleveland underwent surgery to remove a tumor in his mouth. The disease remained secret, to prevent the already precarious economic situation from worsening if the news spread. The delicate operation was performed on a boat by a team of doctors from Bellevue Hospital who used techniques unimaginable at the time.
Patients admitted to the New Amsterdam series (and Bellevue) are those included in Medicaid, the American federal program that provides aid for the poorest by individual states. And who were able to take advantage of it thanks to Obamacare, the health reform signed in 2010 by former US President Barack Obama.
When, in 2020, due to the pandemic, the recordings were interrupted, David Schulner, creator of the series, asked to donate to the hospitals masks and other medical devices that should have been used for the filming.
If in the series Dottor Max is reserved about his love life, Ryan Eggold is even more so. But, as you can see from the numerous photos he publishes on social channels, he is very fond of his dog Jody. And recently she participated with him in the campaign of the animal rights association Peta.
The Bellevue is popular in Hollywood. So much so that there are numerous directors who have chosen the hospital for their filming. Among the films we remember, in fact, “Side Effects”, “Awake – Conscious anesthesia” and “Extreme measures – Extreme solutions”.
